Following his visit to Kalinga State University- Rizal Campus, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. and his team proceeded to the university’s main campus for an ocular inspection of DOST-funded initiatives.

In her welcome remarks, Dr. Joy Grace P. Doctor, University president, recognized the support of the DOST since 2019. She emphasized on the projects’ impact in the lives of the Ikalinga. These projects include the project BOONDOCT, CLEARS, Caffeine, Silk Innovation Center, Shared Service Facility and the Technology and Innovation Center.

In his keynote address, Secretary Solidum commended KSU as “the most caring university in the Philippines,” not merely because of the name “Kalinga” but due to its outstanding role as a leading research, development, and innovation partner of DOST in the region.

He elaborated on DOST’s four strategic pillars:

Promoting Human Well-being – Addressing health concerns to ensure a longer and better quality of life.

Fostering Wealth Creation – Transforming research and development results into new enterprises while supporting student scholarships.

Reinforcement – Enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience against climate change to safeguard lives and livelihoods.

Sustainability – Managing natural resources responsibly for the benefit of future generations.

Secretary Solidum also emphasized the importance of embracing a circular economy, maximizing resources for sustainable growth. He cited KSU’s sericulture efforts in Rizal as an example of an initiative that should be expanded and sustained beyond current implementations.

Recognizing KSU’s vital role in Smart Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) and Smart Sustainable Communities (SSC) programs, he encouraged the university to strengthen its initiatives in Industry 4.0, smart technology, and smart agriculture.

To enhance its identity, Secretary Solidum proposed that KSU develop a strong institutional branding, suggesting the name “Kalinga sa Unibersidad.” He reaffirmed DOST’s commitment to supporting the university through start-up funding and educational assistance for deserving students, specifically through the initiative of the DOST Regional Director, Dr. Nancy Bantog.

He concluded his address with a challenge to the university, that on his next visit, he hopes to see not only more projects but also greater profitability. “Sa aking susunod na pagbisita, hindi lang maraming proyekto ang makikita kundi marami nang kita. Kapag may maraming kita, magiging maginhawa ang buhay, gaya ng tagline ng butihing gobernador na ‘Lumin-awa Kalinga,’” he added.

Through this visit, Secretary Solidum reinforced the strong partnership between DOST and KSU, further strengthening the university’s role as a hub for innovation, research, and sustainable development.
