On October 28, 2024, Fourth-year BS Agriculture students majoring in Animal Science and Crop Science recently embarked on a significant learning journey to the Horticulture Research and Training Institute (HORTI) in Benguet State University. The field trip, conducted under the subject Crop Prot 14: Beneficial Arthropods and Microorganisms, aimed to enhance students’ understanding of the role of biological control agents in sustainable agriculture.

The visit to the BIOCON Laboratory introduced the students to various beneficial arthropods and microorganisms commonly used in agricultural practices. The activity was spearheaded by faculty members Ms. Jamina Siso and Ms. Rocelyn Bagsao, who are both faculty of the KSU- College of Agriculture.

Key objectives of the educational tour included familiarizing the students with biological control agents, exploring locally available options, and observing the cultural and microscopic characteristics of these agents. Students were also given hands-on experience in isolating, rearing, and producing different biological control agents.

“This field trip provided an invaluable opportunity for our students to witness firsthand the importance of beneficial organisms in crop protection. Observing and participating in the production processes equip them with skills essential for implementing sustainable farming practices in their future endeavors,” Ms.Siso said.

The activity highlighted the critical role of biological controls in reducing dependency on chemical inputs, aligning with the region’s push for eco-friendly agricultural solutions. Students were particularly captivated by the practical demonstrations on mass production techniques of biological agents, which included techniques for cultivating and managing these organisms effectively.

This collaboration with the HORTI at Benguet State University underscores KSU’s commitment to fostering partnerships that provide experiential learning opportunities, preparing its agriculture students to become well-rounded professionals in the field of sustainable farming.

The faculty and students who participated in the field trip conveyed their heartfelt gratitude to the university president, Dr. Joy Grace P. Doctor, for providing this valuable opportunity to enrich their learning experience.

Through this field trip, KSU’s budding agriculturists gained not only technical knowledge but also a deeper appreciation of the intricate balance between agriculture and nature.
