The College of Forestry hosted a Water and Watershed Summit today, July 10, 2024, at the RnD Conference Hall, Bulanao Campus. The event, spearheaded by University President Dr. Eduardo T. Bagtang, and organized by Dr. Robert A. Rodolfo, Dean of the College of Forestry, along with his faculty and staff, was attended by the DENR and NIA representatives, various cooperatives, local government units (LGUs), Provincial Planning and Development Offices (PPDOs), and media practitioners.

The summit is focused on the critical role of watersheds in maintaining the health and quality of water sources. It aimed to bring together experts and stakeholders to discuss accomplishments, address challenges, and develop solutions for sustainable water management.

In his opening remarks, delivered by Dr. Romualdo U. Wacas, Chief Administrative Officer, President Eduardo T. Bagtang emphasized the precious nature of water as an essential resource for all life forms. He highlighted the increasing concerns regarding water availability and quality due to factors such as population growth, illegal logging, mining, and climate change. He stressed that protecting the environment and restoring watersheds are crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainability of water resources.

Dr. Robert A. Rodolfo discussed the program’s rationale and presented the College of Forestry’s accomplishments in research and extension services. He explained that healthy and sustainably managed watersheds provide vital environmental services, economically viable natural resources, and serve as essential water sources for domestic, agricultural, and industrial uses.

“Water is a finite resource, and competing demands from agriculture, industry, and municipalities can lead to conflicts and shortages. By adopting a holistic approach to water management that considers the needs of all stakeholders, we can ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply for everyone,” Dr. Rodolfo added.

The program continued with the sharing of best practices and presentations by various agencies, followed by a question-and-answer session, fostering a collaborative environment for addressing water management challenges.
