The Mathematics Student Organization (MaSO) of Kalinga State University achieved remarkable success at the International Assembly of Youth for UNESCO (Y4U) 2024, held from November 29 to December 1, 2024, at the City State Asturias Hotel in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. With the theme “Empowering Communities through UNESCO Initiatives: Advancing Science and Technology, Culture, Creativity, and Lifelong Learning”, the event brought together 500 participants from UNESCO Clubs nationwide to engage in youth mentoring, dialogue, and collaborative planning aligned with UNESCO’s mission and the World Heritage Convention.
During the assembly, MaSO was honored as the Most Outstanding Club for UNESCO in the Information and Communication Category, recognizing its exemplary efforts in promoting UNESCO’s mandate. The organization’s adviser, Mrs. Lalin A. Tuguic, was awarded Best Paper in the People Category, while MaSO member Jesstony Daoan was recognized as one of the Outstanding Clubs for UNESCO Youth Leaders, showcasing their leadership and commitment to meaningful contributions. Additionally, MaSO representatives Norma B. Pait and Valeree Ayangwa placed second in the Quiz Bowl (College Level), further demonstrating the organization’s academic excellence.
MaSO also made a significant cultural impact during the event. They participated in the One Town, One Product (OTOP) exhibition, presenting the traditional Kalinga delicacy Inandila, which highlighted the rich heritage of the Kalinga community. The group, in collaboration with the Cordillera Youth Brigade, performed the traditional Kalinga dance, Tadok during the cultural presentation competition, earning admiration from attendees for their vibrant showcase of Kalinga’s traditions.
According to Dr. Pinky Larcelle Gas-ib, Director for Distance Education, Transnational Education and International Linkages, MaSO is a registered member of the UNESCO club Philippines.
The assembly emphasized the importance of grassroots changemakers in localizing UNESCO’s initiatives through efforts in science, technology, culture, creativity, and lifelong learning. Participants collectively drafted a key document reflecting their action plans, which will be submitted to the National Commission for UNESCO.
MaSO’s outstanding achievements at Y4U 2024 exemplify its dedication to excellence and its vital role in advancing UNESCO’s mission both locally and internationally. Through its initiatives, the organization continues to empower communities and celebrate the vibrant heritage of Kalinga.
